The Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR) is the lead agency for the South Australian Government’s policy on sport and active recreation. ORSR supports sport and recreation through the development of policy, programs and resources, the provision of funding, recreation and sport planning, infrastructure development, elite sport pathways and programs, and the promotion of physical activity. ORSR also provides strategic policy advice to the Minister on matters relating to the South Australian Racing industry.

The Project

The Game On: Getting South Australia Active project is a call to action for industry leaders, government and other interested stakeholders which aims to:

  • Provide vision for South Australia’s sport and recreation industry.
  • Identify future opportunities for economic growth within the industry.
  • Enhance social capital and capability for world-class facilities and events.
  • Increase stakeholder understanding and engagement with emerging issues.
  • Develop a common platform for stakeholder collaboration, strategic and sector planning.
  • Inform how sport and recreation can contribute to whole of government objectives.

Since June 2019, ORSR has undertaken statewide consultation with the South Australian community on Phase One of the Game On project.

The statewide consultation process sought to gather input regarding how South Australia can be an active state by identifying key opportunities and challenges for participants in and providers of sport and recreation. A full report from this consultation phase can be seen online on the ORSR website

Phase Two of the Game On project aims to consult further with the community and stakeholders to understand how the key issues collated from Phase One will impact on participation and the sustainability and professionalism of the industry.

An Expert Panel, appointed by the Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, prioritised eight key opportunities and challenges from the statewide consultation, that would optimise the benefits for the South Australia community and provide a platform for shared understanding and focused collaboration across the industry and across government.

The eight Game On opportunities and challenges prioritised by the Expert Panel are:

  1. Affordable sport and recreation opportunities
  2. A sustainable sport and recreation sector
  3. Increasing the quantity and quality of volunteering opportunities
  4. High quality, inclusive and accessible sport and recreation infrastructure
  5. Encouraging and enabling lifelong physical activity
  6. High quality and accessible public spaces for active recreation
  7. Encouraging active transport
  8. Active young people with good coordination and strong fundamental movement skills.

The following overachieving principles will be critical all eight themes above:

  • Equity
  • Evidence-Based
  • Collaboration
  • Funding and Resources

It is anticipated that through collaboration across government, the Game On project will drive systemic change that supports the government’s vision for a healthy and active South Australia.
